Jeff Abbott’s connection to the University of Tennessee (UT) began as a student and remained an important part of his life and career. A 1993 graduate of UT Knoxville (UTK), Abbott credits three internships he completed as a student with giving him the experience and confidence that launched his career. After more than 30 years in business, including leadership roles in technology and cybersecurity, he deepened his involvement with UTK in 2025 by becoming an adjunct lecturer at the Haslam College of Business.
Throughout his career, Abbott developed a passion for startups and the challenges entrepreneurs face in bringing their ideas to life. That passion ultimately drew him to UT Ventures.
“I have always had a passion for startups,” he said. After experiencing the challenges of launching a startup himself, he learned firsthand how much difference the right support can make. “There’s a ton of passion with a small group of people just looking for some confidence and some capital from others that are in a position to help you.”
He’s also drawn to entrepreneurs who develop mission driven businesses. Abbott sees the sense of purpose in younger generations and believes supporting passionate leaders can have value beyond the outcome of any single investment.
“You’ll never regret investing in the passion of people and leaders trying to make a difference – no matter what happens,” he said. “Even if they don’t succeed, you’ll have planted the seed of confidence to challenge them to keep going.”
So, when UTRF President and CEO Maha Krishnamurthy introduced him to the UT Ventures concept, his decision was immediate.
“30 seconds, I was all in,” Abbott said. “This is what Vols do!”
For Abbott, the opportunity to support entrepreneurs is even more meaningful when it involves fellow Vols. “I love supporting those people that have great ideas and have a passion for what they’re doing,” he said. “But to do it with fellow Vols or folks that are connected to the University of Tennessee – now you’re in the promised land for me.”
He has also found an unexpected benefit in the founding member group itself. “I didn’t anticipate the power and gosh, phenomenal people that have helped start UT Ventures,” Abbott said. “We have really gelled as a group.”
