For Jim Wingett, the idea behind UT Ventures began with a question: Why shouldn’t University of Tennessee (UT) alumni have a way to invest in companies connected to the University?

A 1983 graduate of UT Martin (UTM), Wingett has spent more than 40 years in financial services and has been an active private equity and venture capital investor for about a decade. His connection to UT has remained strong throughout his career, including serving on the UTM College of Business and Global Affairs Advisory Board and the UT System President’s Council. He and his wife also sponsor nine scholarships for UTM accounting and finance students.

At the UT System’s 2024 President’s Council Fall Showcase, Wingett met UTRF President and CEO Maha Krishnamurthy and asked about creating a vehicle for UT alumni to invest in UT-related startups beyond UTRF’s existing venture activities. That conversation ultimately helped set the stage for UT Ventures.

“I love the idea of UT investors helping UT founders and truly enjoy the camaraderie of the group,” Wingett said.

As a founding member, he has found that the group offers more than an opportunity to invest. “I’ve yet to participate in a proposed investment idea discussion where I didn’t learn something new,” he said, pointing to the “depth and breadth of business experience” among the members.

Wingett sees that combination of relationships, investment and university impact as what makes UT Ventures distinctive.

“The UT Ventures group is unique, and I’m truly enjoying expanding what I’m doing with this group,” he said. “It’s worth joining for the networking opportunity, but I believe we can make some money together that will hopefully also benefit the UT System over time.”
